Process of Traveling for a Nurse
Question:
I am thinking about my first travel assignment in summer ‘06’. When should I start the
process? Are all assignments 12-13 wks? Should I expect travel and housing to be
provided without charge to me?c
Reply:
If you want travel and housing to be paid to you without charge, then expect it. There are
enough companies out there that provide travel and housing that you will have no
problems finding it. A few exceptions exist when it comes to expensive areas such as
California and New York perhaps. These areas may require you to pay partially for
housing due to the outrages expense.
Most assignments are 12-13 weeks long. Sometimes you can find something different or
negotiate for a different length of time.
If you are really serious about traveling, take the time to do your research ahead of time.
You sound like someone that plans ahead and that is good. Starting February 06’, you
can start talking to companies and travelers to get an idea of who you would like to work
for. Take notes and narrow down your search to 5 to 8 companies you like.
All the companies will require similar documentation. This will take awhile for you to
get together too. Having this documentation ready ahead of time will allow you to take a
travel assignment with ease once you find the one you want. You will need documents
such as your immunization record, a health physical within a year, Tb test within a year,
copies of your nursing license, drivers license, and a copy of your social security card to
name a few.
Once you have narrowed down your list of companies and have your documentation
together, call the companies and request an application about 2 months before you are
ready to travel. You will have no problem finding an assignment. The companies you
have picked will be calling you and offering you assignments. Interview with the
hospitals on the phone and make your decision. Within a couple of weeks, you should
have your assignment and be on the road. Once you send in the application and your
documents, things happen fast. Be ready to go. |
